What's the difference between Windows Messenger 4.7 and
5.0? I am thinking about downloading the latest version,
but would like to know what new features Messenger 5.0
includes and if anything has been removed that was in
4.7.

Also, has there been any known problems with Windows
Messenger 5.0?

Greetings Sam,

Firstly, Windows Messenger 5 has support for UPnP file transfers, "digital ink" TabletPC
support, support for both Exchange IM, SIP and the .NET Messenger network as well as several
other tweaks.

What Windows Messenger 5 doesn't have that's in 4.7 is Add-In support, which means there is
no Hotmail, MSN Mobile, or other MSN services that now exist in Windows Messenger 4.7 with
the MSN Add-In.

As for known problems, none out of the ordinary set of Messenger issues.

Would you recommend users to upgrade to Windows Messenger
5.0?

Thanks for all the replies. I have another question.

What does renaming the "Messenger" folder do? I was told
to go the following directory and rename it. C:\Program
files\Messenger

Will this disable Windows Messenger?

Hi Sam,

Depends on the individual users' needs. There's plenty
of users which make use of the MSN
features which prefer to just use Windows Messenger 4.7 -
- 5.0 isn't a "must have" upgrade.

Hi Don,

The Support Center is out of date in several ways, Windows Messenger 5 *is* out.

There is no Add-In support for Windows Messenger 5, and as such, you *will* loose your MSN
Mobile features by upgrading (this is by design).
