in trying to install a printer, I have messed up WinXP so
that it won't even run the "Add Printer" wizard. The
server properties window can't be viewed. It keeps
telling me the spooler service isn't running, but it is.
Can I just re-install WinXP and if I do that will it fix
the XP printer files that I've obviously corrupted? (I
lost the three printers that were installed.)

First try running sfc /scannow

Start, Run (type) sfc /scannow (enter)

and see if that fixes it.

Or try a System Restore to when it was working correctly.

Neither of your suggestions worked. I tried several
previous restore points...

Now I get the spooler subsystem shutting down error
message. I had some garbage records in my ports list that
I was never able to remove with a normal delete. I
haven't played with the registry or done anything outside
of the normal windows xp screens...
Can I restore XP from my install CD without messing up
installed applications?

Thanks for your help. I have resolved my problem as
follows:

I carefully followed all the steps outlined in Microsoft
Knowledge Base Article 324757 which guides you through a
regedit to fix the offending registry keys. I deleted the
bad keys and then went in to the computer manager and
restarted the spooler.

Then I followed the "workaround" tech support article
from the Dlink support FAQs for installing a computer
that's being served by their DI-713P wireless
router/print server.

I got all my original printers back and also successfully
installed a new printer.

Just thought I owed you an explanation of my successful
resolution.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my inquiry.
