Messages selected in outbox do not send

This is a weird one. I have a dial-up connection with
Outlook 2002, so messages when 'sent' go to the outbox
until the next time I send-and-receive. However,
recently, when I look in the Outbox, whichever message is
highlighted at the top of the list instantly changes its
icon from the 'message submitted to be sent' icon, to
the 'message open for editing' icon. If I click on
another message in the outbox to highlight it, or cursor
down the list, the same thing happens to each message
selected. The message does not actually open, but if I
then do a send and receive, the message is not sent. I
have to manually open the message and click 'send' again,
for it to change back to the proper icon and be sent in
the next send-and-receive.

It's annoying because I have to remember not to look in
the Outbox before I do a send-and-receive, or else if I
want to check what's there, I have to go through the
rigmarole of opening and re-sending the message at the
top of the list every time. Why has my Outbox started
doing this?

I've been through obvious checks - I have no Rules that
would be doing this, I have the normal View set up for
the Outbox, etc etc - any thoughts would be much
appreciated.

Why not simply deselect any selected message prior to send/receive. Hold
the CTRL key down when clicking on the selected message should unselect it.

Because once the message has been deselected, its icon
does not return to its previous state. Outlook still
thinks the message is open for editing. Once it has been
selected, deselecting it does not solve the problem.
