Is the Windows XP message 'End Program - O' documented anywhere? How is a
user to understand what it is that needs to be done?

Most likely, this is *not* a Windows message.
How is a user to understand what it is that needs to be done?

Why don't you tell the circumstances causing that message to appear and
the changes (installations) you made prior to the first encounter.

Thanks for your reply.
The message pops up during the shutdown part of a Restart from the
Start>>Turn Off>>Restart. I have *assumed* that it is a Windows XP message.
I have got this message innumerable times in the last year or may be more. I
have Windows XP SP2, Internet Explorer 7, Automatic Updates from Microsoft,
Windows Live Onecare vers; 1.1.1067.8, Antivirus definition vers 1.10.1830.5,
Firewall policy version 1.2.2.53.

One of my basic dissatisfactions with working with the Computer is that
messages pop up without the exact program owning responsibility for the
message and make it socially acceptable enough with a reference to find an
explanation.

Fundamentally, I would like to understand the message first before I do
anything further. From what I have figured out by now, O refers to a
download the Outlook Express is performing when it is 'checking mail'. The
End Program is hung up for some reason.
For your information I get also a message 'End Program -
#gen_Windows#IndexingStatus' sometimes during the shutdown of Restart. I have
Windows Search. I think it has to do with Windows search.
These messages ask for a response, End Now or Cancel, without any guidance

Frankly, it does not make any sense to me to shutdown/restart the system
while checking mails.

Sorry, there is no "Windows search" different from "Start > Search".
Good luck.

Sorry, I meant 'Windows Desktop Search' when I wrote 'Windows search'.
'Windows Desktop Search' is in my Start>>All Programs . Maybe you do not have
it.
The shutdown>>restart was because the screen entitled 'Outlook Express'
showed the screen hang up while 'checking for new messages in 'Hotmail'
which is the first of several tasks it was executing.
