Greetings Charles,

1. What you're seeing is the Messenger service built-in to Windows, *not* Windows Messenger
(which are two different things) which spammers are exploiting -- this is not Microsoft, nor
can Microsoft control them anymore then they can control spam to your e-mail inbox.
To get rid of these pop ups, you'll need to disable the "Messenger Service", click Start,
then Run, enter "services.msc" and click OK. Scroll down to "Messenger", select it,
right-click and then choose Properties. Under startup type, choose 'Disabled' and then
choose the 'Stop' button. After the service is stopped, click OK. Nothing in Windows or any
real third-party applications should be effected by this.

Louis from Montebello, California, called asking how to
disable the gray pop-up windows that come up every time
he surfs on his Windows XP machine.

Windows 2000, Windows NT, and Windows XP all include the
Messenger Service. It's enabled by default. Messenger
allows system admins to send little messages to everyone
on a network, alerting them when the server is going
down. The service makes a lot of sense on a corporate
network, but home users don't need it. Here's how to
disable it:

Right-click My Computer and click Manage.
Click Services and Applications.
Click Services.
Scroll down to Messenger and right-click the entry.
Stop the Service.
Choose Disable as the Startup Type.
Click OK.
