Outlook will access my pop server; show 5 messages to download; the inbox
will show the blue (5); but then it will immediately change to (1) or (2)
and the other messages are gone!

This is particularly aggravating when I am on the phone with someone and
they are trying to send me an email. I'll check the mail; it indicates that
the email is there; but then it's immediately gone!

I've checked the "Ddeleted Items" folder and they're not there either!

Any ideas?

What version of Outlook is this?

Try using Advanced Find, and search for files received in the last day or so
(so you'd find some of the "missing" messages). That should tell you where
they are (what folder).

If they are listed in Inbox, then perhaps you have a View that's hiding
them. The exact command sequence depends on what version of Outlook you
have. But, in Outlook 2002 (Office XP), you'd choose View - Current View -
Customize Current View, and make sure that Filter... is set to Off. If not,
click Filter... and choose Clear All.

If they aren't listed at all, then I'm wondering if perhaps you have a rule
that's zapping, them. Try Tools - Rules Wizard and see if you have any
aggressive rules set up. If so, and if they've been deleting email, then
it's gone. However, at least you can remove/change the rules.

Or, if you're using Outlook 2003, then perhaps you've enabled Junk Mail
filtering, and you've elected to immediately delete incoming email it thinks
is junk. Choose Actions - Junk Mail - Junk Mail Options, and see... if so,
then the email is gone, but you can at least set it up NOT to delete.
