I was wondering how to disable a message window that pops
up while im playing a game or online. I get 2 differnt
messages, one saying my Comp is open to attacks from the
net and another that is telling me that I can stop them
by going to a website. Cant remember the url at this
time. Im not sure if I wanna go to that site or not. Do I
have a Virus or is there a way to stop it? I have XP Home
edition.

I appreciate any feedback, thanks
Jake

You've been hijacked. Not quite as bad as a full fledged virus, but your
computer needs to be cleaned, just the same. You need a program like Ad
Aware or something similar, designed to remove scumware and tracking files
you pick up while surfing the net. There are many good programs available.
Ad Aware is available from Lavasoft here: http://lavasoft.element5.com/

In re-reading your original post, I may have jumped to a wrong conclusion in
my previous response. You MAY have been hijacked. It depends on the type of
message window popping up. You may be getting messenger spam coming in
through exposed ports. In addition to running an ad/spyware/scumware
program, you need to engage your XP firewall. If you have an icon for your
internet connection in the system tray, double click it to open the window,
if there is no icon go to Start Menu, Settings, Network Connections and
double click your connection icon to open the window. Click the Properties
button and select the Advanced tab. Click to put a check mark in Internet
Connection Firewall box. Click OK then close windows.

You should now be in pretty good shape from both types of scum. Though the
firewall should stop the messenger spam, surfing the net still exposes you
to other trash. I recommend you get a watchdog type program, like Ad Watch,
which will always be on the lookout while you surf.
