Merged cells

When I am selecting columns (e.g. to insert a single new column) above a
merged cell Excel is then selecting all the columns incorporated by the
merged cell.

I don't remember this ever happening before - is there an option somewhere
that I can change?
 
I don't think so.

If I remember correctly, this was the behavior in xl97. Each version of excel
seems to behave a bit differently.

For instance, xl2003 doesn't behave this way.
 
I am using Excel 2003 and have never seen this before until very recently -
the only cause I can think of is a few add-ins which may have affected things.
 
Maybe you can share details (what range is merged) and how and what you
selected.

In my simple tests in xl2003, I couldn't duplicate your results.

Just opened a new workbook.

Merged cells A2:C2

Tried to select column B on its own by clicking the column header and as
soon as I released the mouse the selection highlighted was columns A:C.
 
I can't duplicate it in Excel 2003 either. Selected and merged cells A2:C2.
Clicked the column B identifier and only column B was selected. I was even
able to change the width of the column without affecting anything else.

As you said, could be a recent add-in has done this to you.

I couldn't duplicate it either (still xl2003).

To eliminate any pesky addins, you could start excel in safe mode:

Close excel
windows start button|Run
excel /safe

and test what you tried.

And just because I don't trust anyone <bg>, can you double check this:

Open excel normally, do that same test (so it fails) and then
Help|about Microsoft Excel

What version do you see?

(I'm still hoping that you're looking at something besides version 11 (xl2003).)

Tested Excel safe mode and the problem still occurred.

My normal version is Excel 2003 (11.8105.8107) SP2

The add-in with which this problem seems to coincide is Cube Analysis for
SQL Server Analysis Services version 1.5.0166.0.
 
I would have guessed that starting excel in safe mode would mean that that all
addins wouldn't get loaded.

I don't use that particular addin--I don't have a guess about it.

I have the same question. I have experienced the same problem with Excel
2003 Professional on my current work computer. Everyone in my office
experiences this behavior. I have never encountered this problem before, at
home or my previous job. I use Excel 2003 Small Busines at home and 2003
Professional at my previous job.

I am aware of the issues with using merged cells, but they are minor for the
work I do. I use merged cells frequently for a variety of reasons. Not
being able to select and manipulate the entire row or column is fustrating.

I too would like to know how to make it stop.
