When I click 'Start' and 'all programs' the programs would always appear
across the full page, but recently when i click 'Start' and 'All programs'
they appear in a single column and I have to scroll through them to pick up
the one I want.
Can someone please help and 82year old 'wrinkly'

Go to Control Panel and double click "Taskbar and Start Menu".
In "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties", click on the Start Menu
tab.
Hit the Customize button.
Depending on which style Start Menu you're using, do the
following:

XP Style:
Click on the Advanced tab.
In the Start menu items box, remove the check mark from the box
next to "Scroll Programs".
Click OK twice.

Classic Style:
In the "Advanced Start menu options box", remove the check mark
from the box next to "Scroll Programs".
Click OK twice.

Hit the Start button and see if all your programs are now
displayed.
