| start>search?? TIA

From the way you describe it you have configured your
Start Menu to the Classic Start menu style. For more
information search the Windows XP Help and Support
Center for the phrase "change the Start menu style" and
read the Full-text Search Match by that title.

If that is correct then...

According to my research the entries that you see when you
use the Classic Start menu style, and click Start | Search,
are entries from the registry found under the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FindExtensions\Static

And if you Google using that key as an exact phrase there are
32 hits, one of which points to Jerold Schulman's
"JSI, INC_ - Tips & Tricks" Web Page. BTW, Jerold is a
Windows General MVP.

To view the web page and read about the tweak (reghack)
visit Jerold's web site and search for the following Tip:

NOTE:
Changing or deleting registry entries can cause you to have to
reinstall the whole operating system. Before you run the Registry
Editor I recommend that you understand how to backup, edit
and restore the registry.

In particular, I suggest that you read the KB Article section
titled "Export Registry Keys" and then, before you edit the
registry, export the keys that you plan to edit. For more
information see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article and/or Registry FAQ.
