I just installed 3 gig in my machine, using Vista ultimate.it only shows as
2559 mb in system properties, does Vista translate differently?
TIA

Think of the number 2 raised to various exponential powers.

2 raised to the 10th power is 1024, but we refer to it as 1 kilobyte
although it's actually 1024 bytes.

Hi Christopher
Please post back as to which version of Vista Ultimate you are running as
well as processor type and speed...That way people can help a lot
easier....Is this system 32bit or 64bit ??
32bit sees 3gigs or less while 64bit utilizes more....You can Google search
your answer as well on the limitations of 32bit and ram versus 64
bit....Just my 3 cents......

For a 32bit OS some memory about 2GB can be used by hardware. Exactly how
much depends on the specific system. It's not uncommon when there is 4GB
RAM for the OS to see only 2.7 GB or so up to 3.5 GB. The number you're
seeing is a bit below the 2.7GB but it's in the ballpark,

Of course you're right, but so what? He should show more than 3GB than less
by your argument. Hard drive manufacturers screw around with these numbers,
but RAM is RAM and indeed 1GB means 1GB.
