memory?

a dual core computer i recently built up with 2 g.b. ddr memory, has
suddenly ceased to boot up. i just get a memory check message followed by a
blank screen.any advice would be much appreciated,

I would physically check to make sure your RAM is seated correctly.
If so, run MemTest on the machine and see if it finds any errors. (Do
you hear any beep codes?) Run a chkdsk after that from DOS prompt (If
you can find some Windows 98 bootup disks you should be able to do
this from command line)

Most likely hardware, either one of your RAM sticks has failed or your
motherboard has failed.

Reseat the memory sticks. Test with just one stick. Run at least two of
these memory testing utilities. They will create a bootable floppy of CD.
Boot from it and run the tests. Let them run for some time, not just a
single pass.
