Perhaps you have a graphics card which uses shared memory.

Half a gig is a BIT much for integrated graphics.

This same exact question has been asked and answered at least twice a
week. if you go back a day or two you'll say a few related posts.

Short version: Xp has a problem with exactly 4 gig of RAM.

Check this document:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/b/a/eba1050f-a31d-436b-9281-92cdfeae4b45/mem-mgmt.doc

The fourth paragraph on page 10 says:

<QUOTE>
The physical address space is used to address more than just RAM. It
is also used to address all of the memory and some of the registers
presented by devices. Consequently, if a machine is configured with
the maximum amount of physical memory, some of that memory will be
unusable because some of the physical address space is mapped for
other uses.
</QUOTE>

So some of your 4GB physical address space is being used to address
the RAM on your video board, and similar resources on other devices
in your computer. That prevents the machine from using the entire 4GB
of RAM you've got plugged in.
