Hello All,

In task manager it says I have 497MB total committed - And thats with
nothing running!! However if I add up the size of all the processes (and I
do have the box for All Processes from all users ticked) they only add up to
240MB. Does any one have any ideas where the gap is or suggest any
utilities that would explain the missing memory?

TIA

Tim

Why are you worrying about it. XP tries to find a use for all the
memory including caching files etc. Unused memory is wasted memory. If
a new program is started XP dynamically manages the memory needs.

I would agree with your assessment, with one additional comment. Many
times PCs (including brand new OEMs) come with all kinds of Startups
and Watchdogs running. While it's true XP tries to use all available RAM
there's no point in running all those Startups and using RAM/Processor
time that could be better spent doing what the user wants. The list of them
is pretty long, AOL, IM'ers, Printer Watchdogs......Especially easy to
get out of control with the "Hide Inactive Icons" and only see the Chevron
and not realize you've got a shopping list full of them.

You're not giving us the full picture.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the
Performance Tab. What is the Total, the Commit Charge
and the Peak?

What column have you added to get 240 mb?

You may check on pagefile (virtual memory) usage with
Page File Monitor for XP:
http://www.dougknox.com/

If you get anything much more than 50 mb virtual memory
usage for most users this means you need to add RAM
memory. The system uses virtual memory for a limited
number of tasks rather than RAM memory.

Make sure you study the readme.txt file carefully to ensure
you get the utility to work as it should.

Hope this helps.

I think Tim is talking about allocations of virtual memory not memory usage.
If all RAM is used and there is a significant pagefile usage then Tim may
need to add RAM memory. The information Tim has supplied is of course
an incomplete picture.
