I could not find a discussion about memory usage. My
memory is disappearing over time. I am running W 2000 with
all patches applied. I have Norton antivirus and 'zone
alarm" running.
My Question is regarding task manager memory usage
numbers. Explorer.exe is using 36,000k, IEexplorer.exe is
using 33,000k, poproxy.exe 20,000k , and one of my
svchost.exe 12,000k.
A few months ago my sytem at start up ran about 140,00k
total memory used. Now I am over 200,000k at start up and
over 400,000k while using my dial up to internet. I only
have 256 meg memory. Can someone tell me why the above
executables are so large? How can I tell if programs are
starting in the background and what they are? How can I
stop programs from starting but not deleting from my
system but only be used when I decide to run.
Thank You, (beginner)

The background apps that are running can be found in the reg entries in
this KB article....

You can check your services to see if you have some third-party ones that
you don't require to load up.
Also, there may be several services that you can disable or set to "manual"
to save memory (just make sure you know what the service is for)

Also, you may have some third-party browser extensions that are loading up
iexplore.exe and using up (or even leaking) memory:
To disable these:
- Open Internet Explorer
- Clear the checkbox for "Enable third-party browser extensions
(requires restart) found in Tools > Internet Options > Advanced
If this works, then you can proceed to delete the one(s) causing the
problem:
- Run Regedit
- Entries for browser extensions will be found in the below key.
Export and delete the suspect ones.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Extensions

....And of course, scan for spyware

Jason,
Thank you for the information. I am not very comfortable
messing with the registry, can you share some thoughts on
how to protect my system on potential failures i may cause?
Also how do I "check my services" to see if i don't want
some to start up? Do I need a program called MSCONFIG for
win 2000?
Thank You,
Greg

Top causes of problems after registry-hacking : )
1. Guessing
2. Not exporting the affected key before making alterations (File > Export)
As long as you export the key before adjusting the values inside it, you
can import the .reg file an undo your changes
"Description of the Microsoft Windows registry"
support.microsoft.com/?id=256986

You can set the properties on your various services by going to Start > Run
services.msc
...or the long way: Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools
- You want to be careful if you are going to set the startup type of
services from Automatic to Manual to save memory.

If you obtain a copy of msconfig.exe from a Windows XP machine then you can
load this on a 2000 machine.
- This will give you a very easy interface for controlling startup services
and applications

.Jason,
Thank you,
I will try your suggestions. Keep your fingers crossed for
me.
Do you know where I can get a copy of msconfig from the XP
that I can put on my 2000 Pro machine either buy or free??
This sounds like a safer route for me!! OR can you point
me to documentation concerning msconfig works??
Thank You,
Greg
