Memory read errors, various apps

Am regularly receiving now the following message, eg:

Name of application, with the comment "Instruction at "0x030k36d" referenced
memory at "0x00000154." The memory could not be "read." Click on OK to
terminate the program. Cancel to debug the program." The numbers in quotes
vary of course.

This usually occurs when closing a program. I usually just terminate the
program as wouldn't know what to do with the debug information. Any ideas on
what's causing this message, please, and what to do to rectify the problem
would be gratefully appreciated.

My suggestion is that you run a chkdsk /r to run the five complete HDD tests
and to recover any lost sectors. start>run> chkdsk /r or open a command line
interface and run it. Follow the on screen prompts and reboot. The first time
you run this it may take an hour or so, so be patient. Be sure to put the
space in after chkdsk and before the / . Post back with your results. TTNF.

Have you run scans for spy and adware lately? These sort of signs are often
an indicator of something malicious being installed.

Hi there, Have run the chkdsk /r and received the message "The volume is
clean." Should I run the memtest suggested by Malke? Thanks.
I use XP Home SP2 without using the Indexing Service.

Hello Rick. Yes, I regularly run MSAS beta1 latest version/defs., Spyware
Doctor latest version -- all clean. Have NAV2006 and scans are clean.

Done it in Safe mode? Many will block themselves from detection and/or
removal in Normal mode and can only be detected and removed while inactive.
This can only occur if they are not allowed to load in the first place by
loading Safe mode. Also, I wouldn't place a whole lot of stock on MS
defender yet, it's still a beta.
