Memory in Windows XP pro

Yes, but you may not see all the installed RAM because of the way memory
is addressed on 32 bit systems. The *total* amount of addressable
memory is 4GB but you have to keep in mind that other hardware (like
video cards for example) also have memory and they too need addressing
space, so some of the address space is taken from the Top of Memory
range for these devices, thus reducing the available space for RAM. The
reported memory may be as little as 3.25GB, depending in the hardware
installed in the computer.

Hi

Does Windows XP pro support 4 GB of RAM ?

Yes, but whether you will see all 4GB of RAM in XP depends on whether it's
32bit or 64bit XP. 32 bit systems can use up to 4GB of RAM but some will be
used by hardware, so what 32bit XP sees is anywhere from 2.7GB to 3.5 or so
GB. The specific amount depends on the hardware. All 4GB is being used by
the system but less than 4GB is available to programs. See this link:

Hello Best,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

Based on my knowledge, the maximum amount of memory that can be supported
on Windows XP Professional is 4 GB. However, the virtual address space of
processes and applications is still limited to 2 GB by default, aother 2GB
memory is allocated to kernel. This is why Windows XP only shows 2GB of the
memory.

We can use the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file to force Windows XP to
allocate 3 GB of virtual address space to programs and 1 GB to the kernel.

We can use the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file to force Windows XP to
allocate 3 GB of virtual address space to programs and 1 GB to the kernel.

Remember the /3GB switch has NOTHING to do with physical RAM. It has
to do with the way the 4GB virtual address space belonging to each
process is apportioned. If you use the switch, it means that the OS is
limited to 1GB of this virtual space, which will sqeeze it. The switch
should not be used unless you've got a *very* RAM-hungry app that's
having troubles.

Thanks for your clarification, Tim!
