memory compatibility

Dells and such are notorious for being picky about different ram sticks. You
plug them in and in most cases you own them.
 
Depends on the Dell.

For example, if it's a PIII machine with the 440BX chipset, you'd need to
use low-density 256 MB memory. (I don't know whether it is required, but the
low-density 256 MB DIMMs I've seen used 16 chips.)

That's more expensive than the standard high-density stuff, but it tends to
work.

I regret that online vendors make it difficult to identify low-density RAM.
(That, or many don't carry it.) www.crucial.com is one of the safest
sources, if you use their memory selector, but they are not inexpensive.
