Median of unique record

I'm looking for any way to find the median of a range of cells, based o
unique criteria in another range.
E.G.

A[/B]
white 9
blue 6
white 3
white 4
grey 5

The median for the total pop. would be 5.

The median for white would be 4.

I'm seeking a solution however inelegant.

Hi
try the following array formula (entered with CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER):
=MEDIAN(IF(A1:A100="white",B1:B100))
