I got some what of a problem that I think you can help
me with. I've used up almost all my recourses so I though
I give you a shot. I have this box that I'm working on
that has a network problem. I can't get a connection on
the onboard Ethernet card. I troubleshoot the card and
it seems like all the drivers are working fine and when I
go to network connections it show me and x on the local
connection (all the wire and connections are in working
condition) when I ping I get "media
state...........:media disconnected ". So I thought I
would install another nic card. After the installation
was done I check the newer nic card and I get the same
message "media state...........:media disconnected ". The
lights on my router are on. But nothing. And both icons
on the network connection have the x on them and say that
the network cable is disconnected when its not I have the
Ethernet cable connected and the router lights are on and
working find with all my CPU on the network;
Please help me. Thanks, AL

Hello,

A little more info please. Assumptions are bad ideas in
troubleshooting. If you go to the command window (run then cmd.exe ) then
type in c:> ipconfig what do you get?
also what is your network cards set for DHCP or fixed IP. If DHCP who or
what supplies the address? If DHCP is the supplier (router?) setup correctly
to supply it. Make sure you have disabled the XP/any other firewall on these
interfaces. It would normally not block getting an IP address but it will
hose up connections and stop pings if set . If it is a fixed IP address
make sure that it is in the range that your router is expecting this will
stop things in a hurry. I am sure that you have checked some or all of these
but we can not make any assumptions.

Good Luck,

Hmmm. so you say, all cables are checked and rechecked....
Do you enable 802.1 on your netcard, or have installed any security
software - VPN or 802.1x ?
Are there any nonstandard components in the LAN connection?
If yes, disable all suspicious components.

I've seen this with supposedly the right driver (Windows says it is working
fine), but after I went to the manufacturers web site and installed their
driver (rather than the one in Windows) it started working fine.
