My windows media player has suddenly stopped playing any
type of movie file, giving me the message that it is
unable to load an appropiate decompressor, I followed the
help guide and checked the registry key, but it is
correct. I also tried a system restore but it still
fails. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem, some
of the files will play with quick time player, but it
dont give full screen mode, so im desperate to get the
player working again, can anyone help please.

Might want to try nimo codec pack, or ace mega codec pack. And also you
might want ffdshow.
If you install ace, uncheck the darim vision codecs, they crash my explorer
when I view thumbnails of movies and use ffdshow
from the sourceforge site, not the one in ace.

thanx lawrence and neo for your suggestions, i have
already got all the codecs, also got ace megacodec pack,
I have done everything you both suggested, but still wont
play the files,
thanx for your help

Hi Steve,

Let me see if I understand you correctly: In summary, you have installed
multiple codecs, uninstalled, and reinstalled Windows Media Player, and it
still won't play movies, because it errors out claiming it cannot load an
appropriate decompressor, right?

Have you considered purging all codecs, then returning the defaults? You
can then add incrementally, as needed....
How about this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/support/mediaplayer/wmper/wmp80040200.asp

I would think that the routine described there should solve it. I mentioned
having gone through a significant amount of troubleshooting already, but I
do not know if it included the above.

Best of luck,

Sorry... that was a typo on my part.... "I mentioned having gone through"
was *supposed* to be "I know you mentioned having"
