Forgive if this problem recently has been discuessed, but I have a bit
of a crisis on my hand, and do not have the time to search the archives.

I just updated from Me to XP on my laptop, and everything seemingly went
OK. But none of the "old" programs, like Word, Excel, Norton, etc.
works. They are not on the start-menu, and when I try to start the
exe-files directly, I am told to reinstall the programs.

And they do not appear on the Add/Remove software menu. Do I have to
manually reinstall all the software, or is there some way around it?

Also, I understand that it is possible to uninstall Win XP. Will I then
return to the old ME settings?

Thanks in advance!

A lot of older programs need to be reinstalled after
upgrading from Windows 9x or ME to Windows 2000 or Windows
XP due to the change in code paths since the code paths
are totally different. Some programs install different
code on Win9x/ME than Win2000/XP.

Theorectically, after uninstalling Windows XP, your ME
settings will be reset. It is not a restore or image
though. If you delete a file or uninstall a program and
then uninstall XP, that file or program will still be
deleted or uninstalled in ME as well.

Sound like you did a fresh install of XP instead of "an update". A fresh
install overwrites the previous registry settings, start menu items etc. It
seems to me that you have no other choice but a reinstallation of the
programs.
