I have had many problems trying to upgrade from ME to XP,
every time I fix one problem another one arises. The
latest problem I am having is that Windows XP setup
restarts unexpectedly before completion and then when my
machine reboots setup starts all over again. At first I
thought it was an isolated incident but It happens every
time. If anyone can help Id appreciate it.

Youre best bet is to install xp cd,boot to xp cd (you might need to
set this in the BIOS,priority boot device),then at info screen, select,
install xp,new copy, delete current partition (ME),then create partition.
XP then formats the hd and does a clean install.XP doesnt need any ME
files, also, select ntfs file system,ME uses FAT32,a retired file system.

I agree with Andrew that the "clean install" is the best approach. Just be
aware that you will thus lose all programs, settings, and files. Best to
back all your personal files up on a CD, tape, Zip, Jaz, etc. FIRST. Then
get all your application CDs ready to re-install the programs. Make sure
that all your old programs are compatible with WinXP first.

You can run the compatibility utility from the WinXP CD BEFORE you do an
installation. This will tell you what apps and HW may need upgrading prior
to installing WinXP.

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and *hard drives*) that will
still support Win9x.

I should have been more clear in the description of my
problem, sorry. I have had xp running on this machine
before but my hard drive crashed and needed to be
replaced. I havent been able to get Xp installed since. To
me this sounds like it has something to do with the new
drive, but I have tried everything I can think of with the
new drive and I still have no luck. Could I have changed a
driver or something that wouldnt have affected Xp when it
was already installed but would prevent me from
reinstalling it? Any help is appreciated.

Have you tried running the compatibility utility yet? That might give you a
clue what the problem is. Also if you installed a HUGE HDD, it might exceed
the capability of your BIOS. Did you format the HDD as NTFS? Huge drives and
FAT32 don't always play nice together.

Just some ideas to check out.
