Hello,

I have a 3 year old Micron Millenia computer running ME. I've been
experiencing some non-correctable hard-disk errors (affecting the FATs), so
I've purchased a new hard-drive. I've also experienced the typical ME
problems of crashes, etc. I want to install my new hard-drive, and put XP
on it (then copy my data from the old drive), and completely abandon ME and
the old drive. Therefore I want to do a clean XP install on a brand new
hard-drive.

Any suggestions or pitfalls to avoid?

Thanks,
Larry

Larry,

Make sure that the system will handle XP. I recommend that you run the MS
WinXP Upgrade Advisor BEFORE attempting to upgrade your system. It will
identify any anticipated problem areas that you'd need to address prior to
successfully upgrading to WinXP.

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp
to get this free utility.

Then once you've addressed any issues that come up with the utility, make
sure that you have a WinME CD that will be recognized as a legitimate "prior
OS". Not all CDs that ship with systems are "standard" and non-standard ones
may not be recognized by WinXP Setup as a "prior OS". You can check with
Micron Tech Supt about this.

Buy the Upgrade version, unless you buy the OEM version at the same time as
you buy the new HDD (from the same source, this is legal). OEM versions
won't do an upgrade over a prior OS, so my comments above won't apply
regarding WinME CD. [So this might be preferable if your WinME CD isn't a
recognizable system disk.]

Also, I recommend that you choose NTFS as your disk format when that option
comes up during the install.
