I was upgrading a machine from Windows Me to Windows XP and it had
almost finished, but the machine ran out of disk space. How can I get
to the drive to copy off some files and how can I get the upgrade to
restart after clearing off the space. When it boots back up and tries
to resume the update it gives a fatal error.

When it ran out of space a chose to skip the files it was trying to
install.

Temporarily connect the disk as a slave disk to some
other WinXP/2000 PC, then create some room on
the disk.

And just to add to that - you didn't say how large the hard drive is. All by
itself with no subsequent updates, XP SP2 takes up about 2.5 GB. I wouldn't
install XP on anything smaller than 20GB, and that would be pushing it.
