It is sufficient to enable the Windows XP firewall and install all
important Windows XP updates to protect the system after upgrading.
"Description of the Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall"

Do NOT connect to the internet until you have ACTIVATED the XP firewall and
INSTALLED an anti-virus program.. AFTER you have done this, connect to the
internet and get anti-virus and Windows updates BEFORE you do anything
else.. these are NOT steps to get rid of worms/viruses.. these are steps to
PREVENT them in the FIRST place.. and make sure that you get XP drivers for
your modem BEFORE upgrading to XP..

Good luck

Mike

Ok and another thing can Anti-Virus software be running
during the upgrade or will it cause conflict?
Thanks

ok thanks mike i have a USB ADSL Modem and drivers which
will work after the XP upgrade im sure so thats ok.
But cant the sasser embed itself even though you are not
connected to the internet?
thanks

You'll want to disable the antivirus software and any antivirus protection
in BIOS for the upgrade. Disconnect from the internet while upgrading. Get
your protection (firewall and antivirus) back into place before going back
online.

If you download the security patches ahead of time and have a place to
store them until after XP is "in," do so. You can then apply them before
going online lessening your chances or intrusion/infection.

No. This particular worm and scans for vulnerable systems and enters via
open ports.
