Can a MDE file compiled in Access 2003 be used in a PC:
1. Installed with Office XP (Access 2003)?
2. Installed with previous version of Access e.g Access 97 or 2000?
3. Without installing MS Office, just Windows XP?

Simple MDEs can be used with Office XP if all the necessary references are
found. In fact, even if Access 2003 itself is installed on the target
machine; it won't take to much of a difference in service packs or other
things to render your MDE unusable.

Same thing with Access 2000: will work if the format is Access 2000 for very
simple databases and with all the references found; but don't dream to high.

In my opinion, you will have a lot of problem with MDE files if you simply
want to copy it on a new PC. However, by using the runtime for Access 2003
in association with a good installation procedure such a one from Sagekey,
you chances of success will be pretty good.

I have quite a few mde files out in my corporate environment all compiled in
A2K. Multiple users, and have had very few issues.

If you are compiling in A2003, in A2003 format, your mde file will be only
usable on anPC with Access 2003. If you compiled in A2k format, you can use
it on a PC with A2k or A2003, but not A97.
You must still have some version of access on each PC. Unless you have the
developers extensions, which alow you to distribute a runtime version of
Access with your app.

Hi,

Does your users have different versions of Windows (Win98, Me, XP, with
or without Sp2, etc.) or if they share the same environment?

I ask you the question because I had this problem with Access 2000 some
years ago and I had never be able to solve it. In fact, even an MDB file
associated with a security file (.MDW) were so much of a trouble that we
have forgot about the idea of even trying protecting the file.

This was with A2000 but some tests with A2002 had give me the same kind
of results at the time.

If you don't have any trouble with A2003 MDE and ADE files on multiple
environment, I will gladly give it a new try.

We are fortunate to be in a very uniform netwrok environment (we call our IS
dept Fort Knox). All on Win 2K SP4 and Office 2k SR1. My personal net at home
is on Win XPand Win98SE, again with Office 2K SP3, and all my apps run on my
home net as well as work.

I haven't worked with Access security. The stuff I'm building doesn't
justify the additional hastles and maintenance.
