MDAC with .NET?

Sorry for being a bit of a layman on this, but with Windows
2003 .NET, all my 3rd party applications using MDAC fail?

Is this to be expected by the way .NET is designed (i.e.
MDAC is redundant as .NET handles this layer)?

Nope. You still need MDAC. Off the top of my head, you may have a versioning
problem, as the version of MDAC installed with 2003 I believe is 2.7.
 
I had a question on this as well.

Does the .Net redistributable (dotnetfx.exe) install MDAC or does it have to
be installed separately?
