When I go into Outlook Express, McAfee starts "processing messages" It
finds over 2000 of them from somewhere and then it finds another 300. As
this takes some time it is becoming a pain. I've tried disabling various
options in McAfee but it still insists on processing.

What is it doing, and , more important, how can I stop it?

Well; you tell us: WHAT is it saying on the screen? I can't quite see it
from here.

Just that, "Processing messages" in a counter counting up to 2200 messages
or thereabouts. The McAfee logo is top left.

When it finishes counting, OE finishes loading.

Hi John,
Here is from the Horse mouth:

You can send to them if the above didn't help, also you need to log into
your e-mail server and delete the unwanted e-mails to clear your inbox or the
mcafee will process them every time.

Turn E-mail scanning OFF.

E-mail scanning in Outlook Express is a no-no. You will still be protected.

3. Turn off email scanning in your antivirus software.

As surprising and ironic as it may seem though, the most common cause of
DBX corruption is not a virus, but rather anti-virus programs that are
configured to scan incoming or outgoing e-mail. Even the most well-known
anti-virus programs have exhibited this problem from time to time.

Is my computer still protected against viruses if I disable Email Scanning?
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses
that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect
scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email
and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this.
To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

Hi Nass,

Yes, it did indeed help. The way into McAfee to change the settings and stop
it processing messages is there in black and white. It's a good job as well,
I would never have found it on my own.

What a relief to get rid of that. Many thanks indeed.

John.
