Mblasterworm and subsequent problems...

So the other day -- Saturday night -- I had a problem
where, twice my computer was shut down due to something I
later found out was a 'blasterworm' virus, which apparently
was in major circulation a few months ago, so I'm not sure
how I got it but...

After checking through a couple message boards and other
things, I found a link to this official Microsoft page,
where a patch could be downloaded. I did so, and, though it
was fine for the rest of the night, when I came down in the
morning to do some work, things were screwy.

Now, my Internet Explorer will not work, and everything
else on my computer is extremely slow.

-I have a cable connection
-I have no firewalls that I know of
-I kept my computer on from the time I downloaded the patch
Saturday night and the time it wasn't working Sunday morning
-I've never had any troubles before this

(Hooray for Mozilla for coming through)

Basically, I'm wondering what went wrong and what I'm
supposed to do to fix it.

Thanks much!
-Molly

I had a similiar problem with the blaster, but there is a
extracting tool on Microsoft Update (Windows-KB833330-ENU)
that I was lucky enough to have downloaded and saved. I
got hit by the blaster twice in the process of trying to
update a newly re-installed XP. The first time that I
tried to extract, I was online and I got an error report
that told me I needed another file to support the
extracting tool. I went back into update, but it was
taking forever, and out of frustration I logged off,
tried the extract offline from my saved file and it
worked! (now I wonder whether the error report was fake?)
I was then able to get back to Microsoft to install the
remaining updates. I also downloaded Spybot (recommended
by Dell) which scans and removes ad and spyware at
lightening speed---well worth the $40.00 to get things
back to normal. (Yes, I was leary too...but it really
does work!) Hope this helps.
