Maxtor ATA Hard Drive unable to partition and format!!!

I purchased a 40 Gigabyte drive from Best Buy removed it
from the box and installed it on a brand new pc Im
building (All new components). I installed this ATA drive
and proceeded to fdisk etc..created the partition and
restarted the system. After the restart I attempted to
format the drive and the process was terminated with an
error message " The volume * REMOTE * is not supported".
I dont get it I never connected the drive to any network
or anything!!!! Best Buy wouldnt take back the drive , Any
Suggestions?

Did you try setting up the drive using Maxtor's MaxBlast software -
available from their web site?
 
OK, you have not given us the full story here.
For setup of the hardware and BIOS
When you booted the new PC for the first time, did you go into BIOS and setup the RAID as BASIC?
Did you go through the RAID setup in BIOS?
Did you copy the RAID drivers onto a separate floppy drive?

Windows Installation
Did you then re-boot off the Windows XP CD?
Did you press F6 and insert the RAID driver floppy?

Hard Drive Preparation
Did you boot off the Maxtor CD and set up the drive - partition and format?
Did you then re-boot off the Windows XP CD?
Did you press F6 and insert the RAID driver floppy?
 
If you're installing Windows XP on the new drive, don't use Fdisk.
Just boot from the Windows XP CD and use its setup process to
partition and format the drive.
 
Shouldn't have to do anything with RAID unless he has two 40 GB
harddrives that he has set up.

There have been two great suggestions that have really stood out and I
decided to follow up and put them in one easy to read post for you.

First, instead of using FDISK, you should let Windows XP Install
partition and format the harddrive. Just stick the CD in, boot off it,
wait until it loads everything, install and just tell it to delete all
partitions and format to NTFS during setup.

Second, if you didn't plan on using Windows XP, still don't use FDISK.
Use the software that came with your harddrive. As I think it was Jerry
pointed out MaxBlast.

Third, try using a Windows 98 Bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com and use the
fdisk on that. Remove all partitions, REBOOT, fdisk again and add a
primary partition for the full size, REBOOT, and try formatting again.

Finally, if nothing makes it work, make Best Buy take it back. They may
try to refuse, but they have to send it back to the manufacturer and
give you a new drive (unless you caused visible physical damage to the
drive or have sent in a rebate on it).
 
Yes..dont use the fdisk and format commands on this drive..use the Maxblast
program that came with the drive. If you cannot find it, check the maxtor
site and download the appropriate program.. I had similar problems with
trying to use the older fdisk and format commands on a maxtor 40 gig too.
