My PC is a Dual Opteron 2200 and has the ability to take 8gb of ECC RAM I currently have 3gb, but would like to know if I do upgrade to the full amount how much of this will Windows XP Pro be able to address.

I have read there is a 4gb limit. Yet I have a colleague who has a dual Xeon with 6gb that seems to work just fine with Windows XP so I am unsure as to what is allowed and what is just a support boundry for Micro$oft

Thanks.

Patrick

Windows XP will recognize up to 4GB of RAM. Anything exceeding
4GB will not be recognized or supported.

I also read that to go above 3Gb you must edit boot.ini to add a /3GB switch
to the end of the line starting XP.

4294967296 or 2^32

When a 64 bit OS is out, it will be 2^64 or

That is only required when you have an application that was specifically
written to use memory above the 2GB line - in other words, if the programmer
didn't write the application to use more than 2GB, then the switch will be
meaningless, except you reduce the amount of memory available for XP (the
OS) to use for paging, caching, and loading the kernel. By default, if
having the full 4GB of memory available, WinXP will partition the memory to
2GB for applications and 2GB for the OS, all the /3GB switch does it take
from the OS and gives to applications, it none of your applications can use
more than 2GB, 1GB will be wasted.
