Maximum File/Folder length?

Mr. B

Given that XP (using NTFS) has a maximum 255 character limitation with respect
to a file name (including extension?)... does this number also applies to the
'total' characters in a full path of a folder?

In other words, if you had, say 5 levels of Folders with a total (including
the slash) of 'over' 255 characters... AND a file with a long name (say 50
characters... will Explorer puke?

What's the rules on Files/Folders.

My reason is that our office has 'adopted' a HORRIBLE folder naming
convention... very verbose and deep (in levels). And users constantly write
long file names. And I know sooner or later, we'll end up with a problem in
not being able to open a file (or folder).

Any info greatly appreciated.

The total path statement, including the file name, may be no more that 255
characters.

Ouch... I'll advise them.

Thanks!

Slight correction. It's 256 characters when using the NTFS file system.
Don't know what it is for the fat32 file system.
