Maximum characters allowed

What is the maximum number of characters allowed in a
cell? I know if you have too much text it will not all
show on screen (unless you click in the cell) or in print
if there's too much text. I could sit and fill a cell
with text and see where it cuts me off and then count the
characters, but that would time consuming! I tried to
find it in Help but Help didn't help!

the idea about locking up the Microsoft marketing guys!!!
