Hi all,
My Xp system seems to be running low and I was told to make the C
drive larger.

Could someone tell me what the maximum partition size can be, I have a 26gb
installed and split in to two partitions, C=16gb NTFC with 2gb free, E=10gb
NFTC with 1gb free.
I can transfer the contents of E which is just data to another HD

Who told you that? 2gb free and 1gb free is fine. That amount of free space
won't effect performance. My 30gb has less than 400 mb left and it screams
along just fine.
But anyway, you can make a partition as big as that drive is. With 26gb
drive you can have one approximate 26gb partition.

Thanks for that, think I will save the hassle and leave it as it is then,
will look else where for why system seems to be running slow now.

But if you add a user account it will take up files, also you should put the
virtual memory onto the non windows hard drive witch will free up space and
will put a 'temp files' folder on the other partition. You can download
partition magic 8.0 to resize partitions.

.
The NTFS file system can read up to 2 terabytes. 4
terabytes with 4 GB of system memory installed.

In NTFS the size is effectively not limited. But to expand C you will
either have to delete it (and E) in the course of a complete format and
reinstall of the system, or will need third party software. What I use
is BootIT NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com ($35 shareware - 30 day full
functional trial)

Download, to its own folder, extract from the zip, run the bootitng to
make a boot floppy.

Boot the floppy, Cancel Install, entering maintenance, then click on
Partition work. Highlight the lower partition in the middle pane (the
E:) and click Delete. Then click the remaining one (C: and click
Resize, to expand it to use all the space

Or

Move data out of C so there is enough room. In Internet Options, click
Settings and move the Temporary Internet files folder to a different
drive. Open a My Computer on a different drive and one on
C:\Documents and Settings\<you>\ to show My Documents; *right* drag that
to the other drive, taking *Move* here.

With that 16 GB should be plenty for System and Programs. You *may*
need to check where certain programs are putting their data and if
necessary uninstall them and install again (to say E:). I had a friends
machine where they had installed an auction manager to go with eBay; it
insisted in having all its data in with it (and as installed therefore
in Program Files) - to the tune of 2GB
