Hi All,

I was thinking of purchasing a Maxtor 3100
external USB/Firewire drive.

Question: what is the maximum file size
I can place on one of these drives? (Not
how many files, how large can a single file be.)

Many thanks,

If the drive is formatted in NTFS, I dont believe you will have a file
size problem.

My impression was that it was FAT32.

Can I reformat it (an external USB hard drive) with NTFS?
Do I need any special tools?

You can reformat the drive, best done before placing any files on the drive.
Simply get the USB connection working then either right click on the drive
letter in My Computer or Windows Explorer and Click on Format. Change to a
NTFS drive format and answer Y to the "delete all data"question if it
appears.

If data is already on the drive you can convert FAT to NTFS (It isn't as
efficient a file structure as a fresh format - or so I have been told)
Click Start/Run, type CMD and press enter. Type CONVERT X: /FS:NTFS
/X and press Enter, where X: is the drive letter for the USB drive
