Before I reloaded XP, I was able to see the volume bar on the screen whenever
I changed the volume, now it is no longer there. How do I get this back.

Go to control pannel, dub click the sound and audio device icon. In that box
their is a check box to put the sound icon back on the task bar. If it is
already checked, uncheck it and apply, then put the check back in the box.

It shows it on the task bar. Maybe I did not fully explain my situation.
Before when I touched the volume control buttons on my laptop (Compaq
Presario x1010us - running XP Home SP2) next to the keyboard, a volume bar
would appear on the screen and color boxes would either appear or disappear
in relation to raising or lowering the volume. I updated the video driver
and this did nothing. Could it have been a 3rd party software that provided
this feature or enabled a windows feature? I thought I read something about
this in another forum on this site. I dont believe it was a Compaq feature
because I used the recovery disk provided from Compaq to reinstall XP.
