I'm editing a book in Word 97, and created a master document with
sub-documents for all the chapters.

What is the best way of sending the whole thing to a publisher (or anyone
else)?

Does one have to expand the Master Document in order to Zip it, or can one
create a Zip archive of the whole thing by just using the master document?

The best plan is to combine the documents into a single document while you
still can, as the master document function is notorious for corrupting
documents. Zip up the resulting document and e-mail it.

So what's the easiest way to do that?

Expand it and "save as"?

There's a utility on the downloads page of my web site called boiler.zip
which will enable you to combine all the documents into a single document.
There will inevitably be some tidying up required of the final document -
but Word can work with hundreds (even thousands) of pages in a single
document and this is safer than master document. I would make copies of the
originals and work with those.
