markup wont turn off

I am using Word2003 and the markup view is suddenly being automatically selected upon opening documents. I do not wish to see the markup view, and indeed I am not tracking changes! Any thoughts on how I can get Word to not open in markup mode?

Are these documents that have been sent to you by email?

No, and they have never had any changes tracked on them. I first thought perhaps I have saved too many versions of the same document, since I have used one document as a template for others using save as. However, even now for other unrelated documents or new documents, word is opening in markup mode. Even if I accept changes (which haven't been made), whilst the markup in the document disappears, the markup mode is still highlighted in the view menu
