Map a drive w/o logging in?

I'm have difficulty with researching and googling because I am unable to
describe my question and hope that someone can enlighten me with this request.

Basically, I don't have any trouble with connecting my laptop to my pc and
transfer files between them via wireless or cross-over cable. But I can do
so if I log into windows on both machines.

As an experiment, I tried to gain access to my laptop drive, from the pc,
without having windows open on the laptop side. I logged into the laptop c
drive via recovery console, but my pc could not map or see the laptop drive.
This was ok, since I think that there is something more required in order to
get the laptop connected via cross over cable.

I know that the laptop harddrive can be removed and conencted directly to
the pc. But can the laptop drive be accessed directly and while still in the
laptop?

As mentioned, its kind of a hard queston because I am not network savvy and
don't know the terms I need to use to begin my research....

Can anyone shed some technical light as to what I am trying to accomplish....?

thanks..

As long as the laptop is turned on, you do not have to be logged into the
laptop for the desktop to "network" to it.
Did you actually mark any of the drives or folders as shared? YOu can map
the the default share by using the C$ symbol.

Unless you have Windows (or some other network-aware software, like maybe a
Linux bootable CD with NTFS drivers) running on the laptop, you won't be
able to access it over the network no matter what you do with cabling or
client configuration. Recovery Console is not network aware and doesn't run
the services you need to access the laptop over the network.

You should be able to start the laptop up normally and not log in but still
have network access to its drive.

ok, thanks for the clarity and it sounds like what I am trying to do...
I need to absorb this a bit more before my response...

yeh, that is what i was thinking to:
that I should be able to start the laptop, not log in to windows and
somehow get control of its drive.

So it sounds like maybe i need
to boot the laptop with somekind of networking aware(something or another)
if i want my pc to see the drive....

This makes sense to me, and didn't think that i needed
to make somekind of boot disk with networking on it.
Sort of like when booting safemode with networking.

Thanks, at least my thoughts are becoming clearer now......
