Can someone tell me what svchost.exe is all about? I have 4 instances of it
running in Task Manager under Processes. They take up 4.6mb, 4.5mb, 26.2mb,
and 5.7mb. Is there a reason for all of these?

Thanks,

Thanks , Joe. Tried to run the command in that article to see what was
inside these processes, but my XP Home version didn't recognize the
"Tasklist" command. I then noticed that the article was written for XP Pro.

I've noticed that svchost.exe is running simultaneously up to four
times on my system. Is this right?

Yes. It is host to a slew of services, that get initialised in groups -
one instance of it per group.
Is there any list or way to see which processes belong to WindowsXP?

Doug Know has a utility -
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_homeservices.zip
(works equally well in XP Pro) that gives you a list, including what
they do

A lot of the system consists of a whole slew of 'services' which run
more or less independently to service specific needs of the system,
programs and each other. They are loaded on behalf of the system
through svchost, and in groups on different occasions as things get
started - so there are several instances of svchost, each with its own
group. Your set is typical enough
