Manual Network Setup

I am running Windows XP Home and for some unknown reason, the networking wizard will not work. I even tried running it from the installation CD with no success. However, I do not want to go through a "instal in place" if I do not have to, I find they cause more problems than the fix. So, I would like to know if there is a way to setup a home network manually. If anyone could lend me a hand that would be great.

Same thing here. In fact this is the second time it's happened to me
I have an NForce2 chipset MB with built in NIC. (running xp prof.
My cable modem is USB and the onboard NIC goes to a hub and then the hub to my 2nd pc
Uninstalling all network devices does not help. The only way to get it to work last time was to reinstall windows
(I can't express accurately how sick I am of having to reinstall all the time)

It was working until I unpluged the USB connection to my cable modem and then plugged it into the onboard nic instead... I was able to get connect just fine but, when I tried to plug back up via the USB cable and plug my second pc back into the NIC card... no luck... I even tried to manually run the home or small office .exe: nothing happens

I am glad to see I am not the only one with this problem. However, I would still like to get an answer to my question. Does anyone know how to manually set up a home network?
