manipulating Word Document without use of Word.Application

Hi,
is it possible to manipulate a word document without the use of
Word.Application itself? I am curious if this can be done using VS2003 or VS
2005.

You can read/write the properties without automation. It's not much,
but it's something (and combined with fields linked to custom
properties it is sufficient in many situations).
