managing events; link?

Where's a good reference, 101 level, about excel events. I'd like to
understand just how things fire. I have a performance problem (sheet
goes nuts that may or not be improved by putzing with it. (I
assume you can pull the plug on these) I've found pieces around the
net, but someone must have good read on the subject. Thank you.
