Today, windows update included something called
"Malicious Software Removal Tool"

but I can't seem to find it, much less try to figure out how to use it

so, where's it hiding?

I did apparently download it yesterday using windows update
but i cannot find where it downloaded to
where does it show on my computer after its been downloaded using
windowsupdate?

Benjamin;
It never actually installs.
It does its' thing and then leaves.

Here it is:

But, this is not intended to be a substitute for your anti virus
software.

You need to read the KB Article that describes the use of this
tool. The tool is updated the second Tuesday of each month, appears as a
"Critical Update" on the Windows Update site, and runs only when
"downloaded." Nothing is ever truly installed; there's nothing to run
at a later date; there's nothing to ever uninstall.

The problem is (duplicated by using backups) that after running or
installing the "tool" my Windows Xp on my new 200gig hard drive will
continuously reboot as it starts the windows screen.
It will start up ok untill I run the tool. I can still get into Windows
via the safe mode soit must "leave" something behind. It worked ok on a
Image of the drive on a 160 gig hard drive. Oh yest I have updated the bios
and even installed Sp1 on the 200gig hard drive and it works.
What is wrong with this tool?

Hi John,

Please open %windir%\debug\mrt.log in Notepad and post the contents of the
log file.

Thanks,

Randy

I would but I gave up and went back to my 160 gig drive and overwrote the
200gig - now using it as a backup with SP1 on it.
Thanks anyway.
