When I downloaded the current Windows Updates, including the subject,
everything seemed to go smoothly. I rebooted after the installation and
continued with my work. Then I received another update notice. It was the
subject update. I downloaded and installed it, thinking that I may have
missed it previously. I immediately received another notice of an available
update and...you've got it...it was the subject. I can't get rid of the
Windows Update Icon. What's going on here? I've never had this problem
before.

Hi,
Try the following:
Open windows explorer and locate this path:
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download = Delete all in the right
Pane/Window.
If you cannot delete, try in safe Mode then Reboot your machine.
Click Start >> Point to All programs >> Click the Glob for Update and run
the Update site for MS, Ms will check then prompt you for Express Install or
Custom Install, select Custom and proceed with Next Button.
You will be represented with whichever updates there, one of them Malicious
Software Removal Tool , click the [+] to expand it, it will look like this:
[-][ ] Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool <= uncheck the check box
for this update.
Description of the tool here...........
[ ] Never show this update again or something like this <=check this
check box and windows will not install it on your system.
HTH.
