After installing and updating this ms program, how do we use it or does it do
the job at the background? Thanks

If downloaded via Windows Update, the tool runs in silent mode.

If you want to see the results of the scan:
Locate the file named MRT.LOG in the ..\Windows\Debug folder.
Start/Run and type: notepad %windir%\Debug\Mrt.log
This file has the report of the scan.

It downloads the MRT.EXE to the Windows\System32 Folder and runs the file.
It doesn't actually install itself.

For most of us it downloads and runs as part of the regular monthly
updates. The tool is updated each month and will remove a limited amount
of malware. It is not a substitute for having properly configured
anti-virus and anti-spyware software.

You can obtain perfectly adequate freeware anti-virus and anti-spyware
software. I use:

AVG Free 8.0 Anti-Virus
http://free.avg.com/

Spybot S & D. There is a freeware version buried in this link:

mrt.exe is usually in the folder C:\WINDOWS\system32\, which is in the
"path". Therefore, simply typing "mrt" (withut quotes) in the Start >
Run box and pressing Enter should start mrt.exe. This is what I have
been doing for a long time now.
