I am using the chevron autoshape and typing text directly into the shape. I
want my text to follow the outline of the chevron and to remain contained
within the boundaries of the shape. I cannot find a way to do this. I can
make the text wrap within the autoshape but long pieces of text will fall
outside the chevron. Any suggestions?

PPT text doesn't really provide for this, however you can (with a bit of
work) usually get the desired effect using "WordArt" within PPT.

What Austin said, Jules.

If you don't have a lot of text, it might be easiest to put each letter in
its own textbox and use the Distribute tools (Draw/Align and Distribute) to
place them equal distance apart. Place the upper- and lower- (or right- and
left-) most objects and then select all the objects you want to distribute.
Then hit Draw/Align and Distribute, distribute horizontally and then
distribute vertically.
