Hello:

I often notice that people submit snapshots of application results to
forums, and/or are able to generate such snapshots. As of now, I only know
how to save images from a website via the browser: "Save Image as.."
function.

What's the most direct way such snapshots are generated?

Can this be done with the software already found in Windows XP or deos it
require downloading and/or purchasing new software?

TIA

Just hold down either the ctrl key or alt key and press the keyboard print
screen button.

This will copy either the whole screen or just the in focus program window
to you clipboard. Now open any software you have that will display a
picture (eg word, any photo software etc) and press ctrl-V to paste the
picture.

Screen shots. For what you already have, use the Print Screen button and
edit in Paint. However, this freeware program uses the Print Screen button
and you can quickly select the desired image and save it to a folder. No
other editing is usually needed.

Note that some newsgroups frown on screen shots and HTML in general. I use
it in a newsgroup when text alone does not suffice. (AKA, very seldom).

If you're referring to taking a screenshot of what's shown on your monitor, the
easiest method of capturing such an image is to hit the Print Screen button on
your keyboard. This will capture everything you see on your monitor. If you only
want to capture the active window, hit the Alt + Print Screen keys at the same
time. The image is now saved to your clipboard. Next, got to Start -> All
Programs -> Accessories and open Paint. In Paint, click on the Edit menu on the
toolbar at the top of the window and select Paste from the menu that drops down.
You can also hit the Ctrl + V keys at the same time to paste the image into
Paint. Once the image is in Paint you can click on the File menu and save to any
of the available image formats.

There are also third party programs available to save screenshots.

Once you have your screenshot, you can upload it to a personal web page or use
one of the image hosting services available on the internet. Here's one that
I've seen used frequently.

And there are add on programs that will make the printscreen key bring
up a drag and drop rectangle to pick 'any' spot on the screen. These
are more advanced and some are not free programs, but we used such at
the office called Hard Copy.

The above method Lorne gave you works with not modifications of your
system. Its safe. And if you past into mspaint, you can then crop the
image.

Google 'screen capture' if you are interested in pursuing a more
advanced program.

Thanks everyone here for the useful and easy suggestions. Seems simple
enough.

Pressing the <PrtScn> key copies the entire display, including the
Desktop Wallpaper, to the clipboard (iow, into RAM). Pressing
<ALT>+<PrtScn> copies only the active Window to the clipboard. To view
the screen capture, open a graphics program, such as MS Paint, and press
<CTRL>+V. This will paste the contents of the clipboard (your
screenshot) into the open file, and allow you to view it or save it as a
file for later use.
