Trying to make my new USB disk sharable to others on my network (all XP Pro)
and not having any luck. Is this a USB problem (my C: Drive is sharable,
but not my E: Drive (the USB))

It should work. What exactly did you try, how did you try to connect to the
drive across the network, and what errors did you get?

"Lanwench [MVP - Exchange]"

Highlight in My Computer, right-click, Properties, Sharing

No Hand under it when done, although I can make a directory on that drive
sharable.

What name did you share it as?
Type

net share <enter>

in a command prompt - does it show up?

And how did you try to connect to the share across the network, as I asked?

USB drives are removable, therefore the drive letter is dynamic.

Yes Frank, they are dynamic with one exception. You can use Disk Management
module to assign a drive letter to a USB drive and Windows will remember
which drive letter to use for this particular USB drive. This is great when
used with batch programs and/or backup programs that depend on fixed drive
letter. The problem with this is that when this USB drive is removed, other
device, such as mapped drive or another USB drive can use the freed drive
letter which then may create problems when the original USB drive is
re-inserted, in which case this USB drive will not be visible.
Regardless if this drive letter is dynamic or not, this drive should be
sharable. I have tried it on my system and had no problem with either type.

It was very weird: I got up this AM, read your note, decided I'd give
setting shared status one more try through Properties before trying Disk
Management, powered up the USB, and it worked under Properties!!
